A family estate rooted in the volcanic soils of southern Styria, crafting wines that carry the ancient force of the land from one generation to the next.

The Story

Weingut Krispel is rooted in the volcanic landscape of Straden, a small wine village in the far south of Styria near the Slovenian border. Toni Krispel laid the foundations; his son Stefan expanded the estate and sharpened its identity, driven by a clear personal ambition: to make the Vulkanland Steiermark tangible in the glass. "My vision is to make the diversity of soils and climate of this region perceptible," Stefan has said, "and to bring the primal force of the volcanic rock into the bottle with passion and precision."

The estate has carried Nachhaltig Austria certification since 2020, with full organic certification for both vineyards and the on-site woolly pig farm following in 2023. A major expansion of the production facilities, completed in 2023, added a state-of-the-art optical grape sorting system unique in Styria. Visitors can experience the estate through cellar tours, tastings, and the Genusstheater restaurant, which serves dishes built around produce from the property itself.

In the Vineyard

The vineyards of Weingut Krispel sit within the Vulkanland Steiermark DAC, one of Austria's most geologically distinctive wine regions. Basalt, volcanic red clay, clay-limestone and ancient marine sediments vary across the estate's sites, with top parcels classified under the Eruption quality pyramid. Ried Neusetzberg is an Erste Lage site with westerly-facing vineyards over shell limestone and basalt weathering soils. Ried Hochstrandl, the estate's Große Lage, is a steep southeast-facing site where basalt dominates the upper slope and deep basalt weathering soils run to the foot.

Farming is done without herbicides or pesticides across all plots. The estate holds Nachhaltig Austria certification and has been fully organic certified since 2023, with energy supply that is largely self-sufficient.

The Wines

The range follows the three tiers of the Vulkanland Steiermark DAC system. Regional Gebietswein wines offer fresh, variety-driven expressions of Welschriesling, Gelber Muskateller, Sauvignon Blanc, Grauburgunder and Weissburgunder. At Ortswein level, the Straden DAC wines spend ten months in large oak casks, adding depth while keeping the volcanic character intact. The Erste Lage and Große Lage wines from Ried Neusetzberg and Ried Hochstrandl are the estate's most serious work: old-vine Sauvignon Blanc and Grauburgunder with dense structure, fine salinity and pronounced mineral depth.

The sparkling range is made by the traditional method with 18 months on the lees, including a Brut Reserve and Brut Reserve Rosé. A Gelber Muskateller Brut and a Frizzante complete a sparkling offer that sits well above the regional average.
