Six generations of family winemaking on the edge of the Wienerwald, producing wines from one of Lower Austria's most historically rich and geologically distinctive wine regions.

The Story

The Schup family has been rooted in Guntramsdorf for more than 300 years, farming the same corner of the Thermenregion since long before it had a name. The Romans recognised the potential of this land at the edge of the Wienerwald two millennia ago, and the family has been refining that understanding ever since. Gregor V grew the estate from 1.5 to 30 hectares over more than 35 years at the helm of the cellar, earning numerous awards along the way. His wife Eva runs the Heurigenrestaurant on the property, where traditional Viennese hospitality meets her own contemporary approach to food.

The sixth generation arrived in 2019, when Johanna and Gregor Schup joined the family business. Johanna trained at the Wine Academy (WSET) and completed a placement in Burgundy with François Legros in Nuits-Saint-Georges, developing a particular focus on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Gregor followed a complementary path, working at Schloss Gobelsburg before becoming the first Austrian trainee at Château Latour in Bordeaux. The French influence is still present in the wines: a respect for structure, patience and the kind of elegance that only comes with time.

In the Vineyard

The estate's most significant holding is the Ried Eichkogel, a monopole vineyard and UNESCO-recognised biosphere reserve situated below the Anninger, on the edge of the Wienerwald. The site has a permanent soil temperature around three degrees above the regional average, the result of thermal influences and a unique microclimate that creates ideal conditions for long-ripening varieties. The underlying shell limestone gives the wines their characteristic mineral precision and structural finesse, making the Eichkogel particularly well suited to Burgundy varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Zweigelt, Merlot and Syrah.

Beyond the Eichkogel, the estate's 30 hectares span the key sites of the Thermenregion, where the northern area around Gumpoldskirchen is defined by the indigenous white varieties Zierfandler and Rotgipfler, and the south by Sankt Laurent and Pinot Noir. The gravelly limestone soils throughout the region produce wines with natural freshness and a long mineral finish.

The Wines

The Thermenregion's indigenous varieties anchor the white range. The Rotgipfler from Gumpoldskirchen shows ripe orchard fruit, pear and quince with a floral lift and a creamy, mineral palate that rewards a few years of patience. The Zierfandler, made entirely in stainless steel to preserve the variety's aromatic precision, delivers apricot and peach on the nose with a long finish of kumquat and grapefruit. The Chardonnay from the Eichkogel is the only white grown on the monopole: aged in large oak, it develops tropical fruit, roasted notes and a mocha finish with genuine depth and balance.

The reds from the Eichkogel show what the site can do with time. The Cabernet Sauvignon 2016, after 36 months in small oak barrels, has settled into a wine of dark fruit, chocolate and fine structure that drinks well now but rewards patience. The Syrah Große Lage 2017 is the estate's most serious red: smoky, complex, with black berry fruit, liquorice, cassis and black olives, fine tannins and considerable depth. Both wines benefit from decanting.
