Some reds are serious. This one is seriously good.

Pour a glass and you get the full picture straight away: blackberry, cherry, a whisper of liquorice and something dark and smoky underneath. On the palate it is rich and juicy, with ripe tannins that are smooth rather than grippy and a finish that sticks around long after the glass is empty.

This is a Merlot that does not need explaining. Full bodied, dry, warm and the kind of red you open when the occasion deserves something proper.

From the Pfalz region of Germany, where the warm sunny climate produces reds with a depth and ripeness that surprises most people. Pair it with red meat, lamb, duck or a good pasta. Or just open it on a Friday.

Dr. Josef Köhr

Weingut Dr. Josef Köhr has farmed the same corner of the Pfalz since 1648, making it one of Germany's most historically rooted family estates. Under the current generation, red varieties now make up half the range, oak ageing has been extended, and a new Syrah signals a producer with one eye firmly on the future. Sixteen hectares at the foot of the Pfälzerwald, farmed with the confidence that comes from nearly 400 years of unbroken knowledge.
